RNA-Technologie könnte gegen Knochenschwund helfen

Die Therapien gegen die Volkskrankheit Osteoporose sind gut – aber nicht so gut, dass sie nicht verbessert werden könnten. In diesem Sinne untersucht ein Team unter Federführung von Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hesse und Prof. Dr. Hanna Taipaleenmäki vom Institut für Muskuloskelettale Medizin des LMU Klinikums, welche molekularen Prozesse am meist altersbedingten Knochenverlust beteiligt sind. Die Wissenschaftler stießen dabei auf zwei sogenannte Mikro-RNAs, die den Aufbau neuen Knochens und gleichzeitig den Abbau bestehenden Knochens entscheidend mit regulieren. Mit einer neuen experimentellen RNA-Therapie hat das Team die verloren gegangene Knochenmasse in osteoporotischen Mäusen wiederhergestellt. Die Ergebnisse wurden kürzlich im Fachjournal „EMBO Molecular Medicine“ veröffentlicht.

RNA Technology could help fight bone loss

Therapies for the widespread disease osteoporosis are good – but not so good that they cannot be improved. With this in mind, a team led by Professor Eric Hesse and Professor Hanna Taipaleenmäki from the Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine at LMU Hospital is investigating which molecular processes are involved in bone loss, which is usually caused by aging. The scientists discovered two so-called microRNAs that play a key role in regulating the formation of new bone and, at the same time, the degradation of existing bone. Using a new experimental RNA therapy, the team restored lost bone mass in osteoporotic mice. The results were recently published in the journal “EMBO Molecular Medicine”.
